Broken Families

It's Friday. Time for my favorite writing exercise of the week. Want to play Five Minute Friday? It’s easy!
1. Write for 5 minutes flat – no editing, no over thinking, no backtracking
2. Link back here and invite others to join in.
3. Meet & encourage someone who linked up before you.

OK, are you ready? Give us your best five minutes on: Together.

Barricades are up. A scribbled sign, “No boys allowed” is taped to the treehouse door. And little eyes and noses peer from the window sills. Giggle explosives are the secret weapon to keep that boy, the only one in the neighborhood, away.

Sometimes I feel like that boy, watching others with unbroken families do everything from meals to vacations together, wishing I could be part of the together. Then one day I sneak into their treehouse and peer in the windows. A lone club member has stopped giggling, hurt and abandoned by a new kind of club erected barricade. Another time, I watch as a club member, who doesn't like a new rule, leaves with stomps. She reappears three days later. The rule is changed.

The tree house club reminds me that even the whole and unbroken families, they have seasons with pain, seasons without together. Sin has infected the whole world. For all families, together is a word we must pray for.

  1. No matter how 'together' someone, or some group (family, club, etc) looks, they all have their 'bad' spots. Love the imagery of the tree house and barricades of life. Thanks.

  2. Ow-Childhood can hurt when we encounter barricades, newly formed alliances and misspoken words. You've captured it beautifully here. Even into adulthood, relationships that have been strong can shatter into shards, cutting loved ones.
Prayer is the indeed the answer.

  3. That little boy standing on the outside of his broken family and looking into the unbroken ones, wishing they were his was looking in a mirror for me. Such imagery and truth in so few words. Love it.

  4. such a vivid picture - and how powerful reminder of how those of us who don't recognize that we are ALL broken can overlook those who are continually reminded of their brokenness.

i've been meditating on that a lot this week - thanks to the selah song "unredeemed" - and how God will take all things shattered and will NOT leave them unredeemed.

i'm so thankful... and i appreciate these important words you've shared today.
